10 years ago, Dan O'Grady (Shay Duffin) captured a Leprechaun (Warwick
Davis) back in Ireland, then made him give him his 100 pieces of gold he
took to backwoods USA with him. But the Leprechaun tracked him down in no
time. O'Grady manages to capture the Leprechaun, but a stroke put him into
the hospital which he hasn't left since thn, and the gold remains hidden
all the time. Now, Tory (Jennifer Aniston), Beverly Hills brat, is
supposed to move into the O'Grady house with her dad (John Sanderford),
and somehow she, local hunk Nathan (Ken Olandt), smart kid Alex (Robert Hy
Gorman) and slightly retarded Ozzie (Mark Holton) accidently set the
Leprechaun free, and since Alex and Ozzie have since found the Leprechaun
gold and hidden it somewhere else, he now goes after the four of them
(dad's hospitalized early on) without mercy - but the kids make narrow
escape after narrow escape (while quite a few supporting characters have
to die). Tory even tries to return the gold once Alex and Ozzie have
handed it over to her - but one coin is missing because Ozzie as swallowed
it. Eventually, Tory tracks O'Grady down to the hospital, to discover the
Leprechaun has gotten their first and taken care of him - but with his
dying breath, O'Grady tells Tory what to do - a four-leaf clover ought to
do the trick. It all ends happily of course. Quite successful
at its time (for being a low budget slasher at least), this movie is today
mostly used to make fun of pre-Friends and later rom com
queen Jennifer Aniston - which is quite a bit unfair, because she does
give her role just the right hint of irony, plus she looks really cute in
that one, without the gloss that soon came with all her appearances. The
film is a rather routine slasher though, one that's a bit undecided
whether or not to go down the comedy road - thus it has a killer who's
more amusing than menacing and who rides a tricycle at times, and you have
chase scenes that are a little devoid of tension because of that, but in
all the film is too run-of-the-mill in approach to be properly
laugh-inducing, so basically it just seems to fall in between too many
stools and fails to properly capture the audience - but that said, there's
way worse out there.
