Love has long left this family: Father Agimi (Kastriot Shehi) is a
disillusioned mechanic who goes to work every day despite a long overdue
paycheck, just to get out of the house, mother Drita (Jorida Meta) doesn't
have a job but she also doesn't have any interests let alone hobbies, so
she kills her time in front of the TV, mostly, and daughter Ermela (Enxhi
Cuku) dreams of studying music and that way making something of herself,
but feels not understood by her parents, who want to force her into their
scheme of a life without happiness. Then one day, Ermela is suddenly gone,
has left the apartment in the middle of the night without saying good-bye
let alone giving a clue where she might have disappeared to. The police
pick up investigations, but initially come up with nothing, so Agimi and
Drita follow the only lead they've got, the taxi driver (Lorenc Kaja) who
has driven her to a lake that night. However, he's not very helpful,
forcing Agimi to more and more extreme measures - until chaos is set to
take its course ... A rather compelling and yet subtle blend of
social study, slice-of-life movie and thriller, this movie works quite as
well as it does because without leaning too heavily on naturalism, it
keeps things real and thus relatable, and doesn't spell everything out but
often favours hints and gestures for the audience to fill in the blanks
drawing on own experiences. And very solid, down-to-earth performances
coupled with a no-frills directorial effort sure help to bring the story
and the film's flair across rather beautifully. Worth a look for sure.
