The residents of an apartment building notice one morning that the
world around the building ... is just gone, there's nothing but their
complex. What's worse, everything that's extended to the outside is just
devoured. Why that is nobody knows, but what is is that to survive they
have to ration themselves in regards to food and water. And as a team the
residents could achieve so much more than individually. Thing is,
humankind isn't really made for common sense or working for the greater
good, so soon the inhabitants are broken up first by race, then even these
groups break up and soon they're all caught in a cycle of violence and
retribution - yet somehow make it through the years still ... Now
I'm of two minds about this movie, on one hand I love it for the very
unflattering mirror it shows to humankind, which as a whole is anything
but stress resistant. On the other hand though, for all its message, the
film's not too well told, it features too many characters that are poorly
fleshed out and jumps to and fro from one to the other rather at random.
At the same time, for the beautiful parable the film tells, it often falls
short in logic, like how do hundreds of people survive for years without
water supply and food sources, and how come the power hasn't cut out
immediately? Now all of this doesn't stand in the way of the film's
message as such, it just doesn't help the film's story and thus makes it
less engaging than it could have been.
