Cailean (Maritza Brikisak) has made many wrong choices, starting at an
early age, choices that sent her father (Joel Bryant) to prison and made
her mother (Carmen Perez) an alcoholic, and that got her son (Jentzen
Ramirez) into a wheelchair. And that last event has particularly unhinged
her, has turned her an alcoholic herself, which in turn led to the
separation of her husband (Frank Krueger) and her hooking up with Emerson
(Dorian Gregory), who despite good intentions is not the best influence on
her. And then she has an accident that kills her and her son - which lands
her in purgatory facing the angel of death Sariel (Daniel Lench), who
confronts her with all her shortcomings - which is not a pretty sight -
and convinces her she was possessed by a demon. But he also offers her a
deal ... The Lurking Man is based on an interesting
concept - telling a deeply human drama in the shape (and using mainstays)
of a horror movie - and there's no doubt that the film gets some really
interesting scenes out of this approach, thanks to an effective
directorial effort and very solid performances. Thing is, as a while, the
movie's just trying to be too smart for its own good, it tries to drive
its point home to violently, relies on allegories too heavily - and what
was supposed to be subtle and inventive ends up as just blunt. That said,
this is still far from a bad movie, just to straight-forward to unfold its
full potential.
