After Sophia's dad has died, she is to inherit a fantastic treasure -
but only after she has passed 3 trials. And there are two individuals, the
Baron Brunicelli and Isabel who need her to fail. You see, the baron,
Isabel and one of Sophia's ancestors have made a deal with the devil to
live forever - but then Sophia's ancestor has renounced the devil in an
exorcism, and while he has not lived forever, he was constantly reborn in
his son ... until Sophia, who was the only child of her father. And now
it's upon her to lift a curse ... or something. But the Devil himself
wants her to fail, so he's on the baron and Isabel's side. Sophia is
given her three trials, to find a scepter in the Mansion of Seven
Mummies, to bury a certain skull near the Mansion of Seven Mummies,
and ultimately to free a sparrow in the mansion again. Of course, the
seven mummies are of the kind who come to life when you least expect it
ant try to kill you. Well, at least Rodrigo, her boyfriend, promises to
help her, and he brings with him championship wrestlers Blue Demon and
Superzan. And then there's also Sophia's best friend ... Isabel. Well,
Rodrigo is soon kidnapped and turned against Sophia and his wrestler
friends, and Isabel ... well, she isn't very good at hiding that she works
for the other side, but Sophia is very gullible. Thanks to the
wrestlers and their sidekick Manolin however, the first two trials are
rather easily mastered, but when it comes to freeing the sparrow, Sophia
has to realize that she herself is the sparrow and the baron and Isabel
figure it's the best to wall her in alive to prevent her from freeing
herself ... and it's only thanks to a hunchbacked gravedigger Sophia has
so far feared but who's actually the vessel for her father's soul, that
she is eventually freed, even if the gravedigger dies in the process - and
with her freed, the baron, Isabel and the mummies all turn to dust while
Rodrigo goes totally insane ... The Mansion of the 7 Mummies
is a movie that feels totally old-fashioned, even for its 1977 release
date: its approach to horror is just incredibly dated, as is its pace, the
creatures on hand and the like - plus the wrestlers, especially Superzan
in his gold-and-red costume, seem terribly out of place in the story -
which of course all adds to the appeal of The Mansion of the 7 Mummies
rather than to distract from it: It's really not a good film, but it's
quite a bit of fun to watch wrestlers getting down and dirty with mummies.
That said though, all the fight scenes are rather poorly staged and filmed
and a tad on the slow side. Still worth a chuckle at least.
