In the silent era, Mary (Amy Staats) and Louise (Diana Ruppe), one the
"American Sweetheart", the other the "Number One Jazz
Baby", were the talk of the town, all their films were smash hits,
and they partied with the best of them. But enter talkie cinema, and both
actresses have to realize their voices aren't at all suited for sound - so
they boycott sound cinema, among with many of their die-hard fans. But as
time goes on and they have nothing new to show, their fame fades away,
their fans jump ship, and the two women fall on hard enough times that
they have to live together. But their lifestyles soon crash, and when
Louise eats Mary's last cookie by mistake that was a symbol of her
unrequitted love, things come to a head. But Louise isn't that
insensitive, so she tries to set things right again ... Now if
you're at all into vintage cinema, circa 1920s/early 30s, you'll
definitely have much to marvel about in this one, as its cinematic
language, sets and props, even hair and makeup sure do the era justice,
plus many allusions and easter eggs are really heart-warming. But that
said, Mary & Louise is not a perfect movie. The one problem is,
it lacks narrative stringency, which makes one not really caring about the
characters, which in turn reduces the film to being a trip down memory
lane - but at least for that it has plenty to offer.
