Three college students - camera-addict Ryan (Michael Downey), slightly
crazy Travis (Connor Thorpe) and I-hate-the-world Steph (Michelle Roe) -
decide to kill someone, just for the kicks, and they decide to catch it
all on cam, for even more kicks. They pretty much map out everything, how
and where to bury the victim alive, how to film whoever it is while in
his/her grave, how to torture him/her ... and then they select a victim,
Kayla (Ila Schactler), a girl at their school, and to win her trust, Ryan
is to interview her on camera. Thing is, while doing so, Ryan starts to like the
girl, and does no longer want to kill her. He knows he just can't bail out
or persuade the others to give up the plan, so he tries to sabotage the
whole affair every step along the way, so much so that Travis at one point
threatens his life. Ultimately, Travis and Steph kidnap Kayla without Ryan's
help, bury her alive and torment her psychologically. Of course, at the
end Ryan arrives as the knight in shining armor, and he saves her even if
that means to kill Travis. This film could have been
interesting as a statement on our society, our predilection of reality TV,
and our fascination for violence - but unfortunately it isn't. Instead of
trying to make a point, the film only treats us to yet another mock
documentary-style narration full of shaky camera movements and devoid of
any compelling images, interesting or even thought-provoking plot details,
and character development is at best minimal. Add to this an extremely
schmaltzy ending, and you're left with something that you don't really
want to watch. In all fairness, this is not the worst movie ever, but that
doesn't mean it's exactly worth a look, now does it?
