Psychiatrist Nell (Justina Mattos) stumbles upon a desolate girl (Dayva
Summer Escobar) with no shoes, no knowledge of the English language, and
little idea about modern life wandering the streets of the city, and
decides to take her in - part out of sympathy, part out of scientific
interest. She soon establishes basic communication and finds out the girl
calls herself Oee and believes herself to be a mermaid. The two woman soon
become fast friends, and despite Nell having a crippling fear of the sea
ever since her mother (Tehani Bray) having committed suicide walking out
into the open water she takes Oee to the beach one day - where she has a
nervous breakdown, and now it's up to Oee to take care of her. Thing is,
the two women soon have a terrible fight about something neglectable, and
Oee runs away - and it's only now that Nell realizes that she needs Oee
muc more than Oee has ever needed her ... A film steeped in
magical realism, where science and fairy tale clash in the most positive
way, Mermaid's Lament is almost sure to touch you in some form
through its atmospheric directorial effort, its unterlying romanticism
that never comes across as saccharine, or through its tender approach to
things that never gives way to pure spectacle and that always feels
heart-felt. And the two women in the lead roles manage to bring their
characters across not only totally likeable and relatable, they also show
definite chemistry, helping to make this a very compelling and unusual
piece of borderline fantasy. ... and if
my review doesn't convince you, feel free to check out the trailer ...
