Nishi loves Myon, & she loves him back, but he is too much of a coward
to tell her about his feelings, so it is little wonder that she soon has hunky
Ryo for her boyfriend. & when she's about to be raped by a mobster, Nishi
is too much of a coward to save her & is therefore shot dead ... In the
afterlife, Nuishi meets a shapeshifting surreal creature claiming to be god who
tells him to go into the light & forget everything ... which is when NMishi
realizes it's not too late yet to change his life, & he doesn't go into the
light but the opposite direction & ... returns just before he was shot,
manages to get hold of the gangster's gun, shoots him, & makes a getaway in
the gangster's car with Myon & her sister Ming ... which is a bad idea
because the gangster's car is filled with drugs, & his boss is not very
likely to let the drugs go, so he sends his gang out to give Nishi & co
chase, & Nishi only survives because he gravely overrates his abilities.
The chase finds an end though, when, with no other way out, Nishi steers the
car off a bridge into the sea ... where the car is caught by a passing giant
whale. At first totally disoriented, do Nishi, Myon & Ming soon meet
Gramps, an old man who has lived in the whale for 30 years, who has built
himself a home inside, & who is overly happy about company. At first the
youngsters lose all hope though, only Gramps' enthusiasm lifts up the morale
& soon the youngsters too find happiness inside the whale, with Nishi &
Myon finally starting to have a sexual relationship ... & the youngsters
can eventually persuade Gramps to help them escape the whale ... a dangerous
venture indeed since everytime the whale opens its mouth, tons of water coe in
like a tidal wave. Eventually though, they all seem to make it, virtually
running on water. But finally out of the whale (which could be a metaphor for
their minds), the time turns back for them to bvefore any of this really
happened, & maybe, this time it will not happen .... but then again, maybe
it might ... A wild mix of the gangster- & action-gtenre,
esotheric ideas, psychedelic sequences, & elements from Pinocchio,
thrown into a surreal anime with some very unusual designs ... & somehow,
the film effortlessly gets away with it, avoiding to be brainheavy, forced or
overly artsy throughout, instead delivering pure entertainement, which all by
itself is a great achievement.
