It's
Howard's funeral, and according to all speakers, he has had a long and
fulfilled life, a life that was also characterized by him never wasting a
penny - pretty much literally, since finding a quarter in the streets has
been filling him with happiness time and again. As a consequence, he has
willed that all his collected and unused, still valid coupons will be
handed out to all the funeral attendees.
Also, Howard’s stinginess has led him to buy a two-for-one spot on the
graveyard with Myra (Joannie Mackenzie), his wife he has married only late
in life – much to the dismay of his children Annie (Judy Copeland) and
Michael (Mark Stolzenberg) from a previous marriage, who, politely put,
are not very fond of Myra. And it’s not just that they feel Myra has
stolen their dad away from them, she’s also a very egocentric person
with little tact or sensitivity. And thus even to be reminded of her every
time they visit their father’s grave is too much for them. But how to
dissuade Myra from (eventually) sharing a grave with their father?
My
Father’s Fabulous Funeral
feels like a film completely fallen out of time – and I mean that in the
best possible way, as this is a short that doesn’t put a focus on
spectacle but characters and character interaction, that neither wants to
overpower its audience with gross-out humor nor has the comedy
pussyfooting around people’s assumed feelings, instead finds its own
voice in a mix of the macabre, the vulgar, the sometimes even
mean-spirited – but all comprised in a story that’s full of heart.
