Truckdriver Holberg (Žorsteinn
Gunnarsson) is found dead, murdered, and when inspector
Erlendur (Ingvar
Eggert Siguršsson) examines the scene of the crime, he
finds very little to go on, apart from the fact that the victim was some
kind of pervert, and a photograph that leads to the death of a 5 year old
girl that happened 30 years ago. Erlendur has the child's body exhumed and
finds her brain removed. This leads Erlendur to the genetic laboratory,
where the girl's brain is actually kept in formaldehyde because she was
suffering from a rare genetic disease. Thing is, the child might have been
Holberg's daughter from a rape, and it turns out that Holberg was indeed a
transmitter of the disease - maybe the only one in all of Iceland. Interesting
detail though: The head of the genetic lab Örn's (Atli
Rafn Siguršsson) daughter has just died from the same
disease, and the more Erlendur diggs in Holberg's past life, the more he
finds out that he was indeed a dangerous rapist ... until he finds proof
that after his daughter's death, Örn, who might be Holberg's own son from
another rape, has lost his cool and killed Holberg. Erlendur finds Örn at
the graveyard, desperately trying to rebury the body of the girl from 30
years ago, but when he feels cornered by Erlendur, he shoots himself ...
and Erlendur continues burying the past, and Örn, who was obviously also
a transmitter of the disease, with it. Ok thriller that is
rather old-fashioned and even predictable in its whodunit-plot, but boasts
a moody directorial effort and makes perfect use of the impressive
Icelandic landscape. In all though, the film is merely watchable and
nothing special, even if there's lot worse around.
