Sichan Siv and Gilbert Tuhabonye are both respected American citizens
these days, with one having dabbled in politics, the other was a
successful runner who now coaches the youth - but they have one disturbing
thing in common, they both escaped genocide: Sichan Siv escpaed a Khmer
Rouge labour camp in Cambodia in the 1970s while Gilbert Tuhabonye was
nearly massacred by Tutsi militia in the 1990s. Neither man had done
anything wrong in their respective countries, they were just unlucky
anough to belong to the wrong fraction of people during a time of ethnic
cleansing - and both men have ultimately decided to keep their memories of
these atrocious times alive to do their bit in keeping history from
repeating itself ... A rather compelling documentary that is at
once a stark reminder that genocide isn't just a thing that came and went
with the Nazis but also happened in more recent history (and is still
happening now, even if that's not part of this movie), and one that finds
its power not in showing cruel picture after cruel picture - which usually
after a time only have a numbing effect - but by breaking it down to the
individual level, by presenting us with two more-or-less everyday persons
who have lived through it, without sensationalism but plenty of humanity -
and it's exactly this approach that will have you thinking about the
film's topic for quite a few days.
