A man (Richard Schaal) finds himself in a cube, with no recollection of
how he got there or what he's supposed to do there. Also there's no way
out. However, other people have no problems coming in, it seems he
receives prisoners rather permanently, including the place's caretaker
(Hugh Webster), its manager (Rex Sevenoaks), the military police (Jon
Granik, Guy Sanvido), a black militant (Don Crawford), a guitarist (Ralp
Enedrsby), a monk (Jerry Nelson), a whole dinner party, and the like.
Thing is, they all seem to know more about the place than he does but
don't let it on and rather make fun of him. And the longer this goes, the
more is our hero likely to break, while he actually needs all his senses
to stay sane. And eventually, he thinks he has actually solved the riddle
of the cube - but that might be just another rabbit hole to a cube just
like his ... If absurd humour's your thing, then The Cube
is pretty much a must-see, as at the same time is of course utter
nonsense, but then also very well-structured, and while it doesn't try
hard to make a lot of sense, it also never veers towards the moronic,
instead is carried by dry humour. And an engaging, straight central
performance by Richard Schaal really makes the piece relatable, while the
rest of the cast is pretty much uniformly funny without overdoing it. A
bit of a hidden gem these days, but definitely one that deserves more
attention as it's absurd comedy at its best, and also most accessible.
