The last two New Year's Eves saw killings with a vintage handgun in the
victims' own homes with no signs of a break-in, so police detective
Sanders (Tony Mardon) is sure there will be another murder this New Year's
Eve - but nobody takes him seriously, not his colleagues nor his
superiors. So for him it's a race against time to prevent a murder he
knows he can't win ... In the meantime, Will (Chris Mills) and Dani
(Annabella Rich), who have met online, meet the first time for real for a
New Year's Eve dinner - but the date goes awkward pretty quickly as Will's
set of social skills is limited, and Dani has her own issues to say the
least. But despite all of that, sparks start to fly while they talk about
this and that - including a vintage handgun ... A very nice
character-driven thriller that's low on action but high on suspense that's
really derived from dialogue and character relations. So while not much is
actually "happening", the situation gets tenser and tenser, for
one due to the well-written dialogue of the couple at the center of the
story but also due to the police scenes acting as kind of a Greek choir,
giving the dialogue subtext. And of course, a strong cast really brings
this to life, too. And the result is quite simply a cool piece of genre
cinema.
