John (John Tueart) and Rebecca (Helen Lewis) are invited by their
friends to attend a show of Nick (Jack Pybus), who's said to be an
outstanding poet and musician, pretty much a superstar of the scene -
though John and Rebecca have never heard of him. The show then is ...
rather mediocre, Nick's not too much of a singer and his words of wisdom
have fortune cookie quality at best - but that doesn't keep his audience,
who call themselves followers rather than fans, from worshipping him like
the new Messiah. John and Rebecca do their best to enjoy the night, even
if their legs grow stiff and their behinds start to hurt - but the show
goes on and on, leading John to utter an innocent remark to Rebecca about
how he's looking forward for the thing to finish, a remark that's
overheard by another audience member, who's not merely offended, she sees
to it that the show's stopped and all turn on John and Rebecca ...
A film that's well-acted and well-directed for sure - but its main
selling-point is without a doubt its story that in the tradition of
old-fashioned short stories tells an engaging yarn all along, but it's the
twist (or rather several turns) in the end that really sells the thing,
with all its macabre brilliance, and even if one kind of expects how this
ends, the film is told in such an original way to still take the audience
by surprise.
Totally worth a watch!
