When Alex (Devon Marie Burt) turns down best friend Aaron (Jay
Saunders) after he confesses his undying love to her, he thinks things
could not possibly turn any worse ... which they do, though - immediately,
when he and Alex are attacked by vampires. Then, out of nowhere, four
ninjas (Daniel Ross, Cory Okouchi, Carla Okouchi, Melissa McConnell) show
up to save them from the vampires, then teleport away taking Alex with
them. Later, Aaron stops by at Alex's place, to find her there, very
much alive, but without any recollection of vampires or ninjas (but she
still very much remembers turning Aaron down), and every time Aaron
mentions either, she seems to immediately forget that part of the
conversation. Now this is weird enough for Aaron to do a bit of
investigating, and before you know it, he has found the ninjas' house
(only a few blocks away), yet mistakes them for vampires (and technically,
one of them, Lily [Carla Okouchi], actually is a vampire, if on a
non-human diet), and is ultimately made their captive. The ninjas try to
brainwash him like they did with Alex, but when that doesn't work, they
are a bit out of options - after all, their existence is to be kept a
secret - and when Alex all of a sudden shows up on their doorstep, still
blissfully unaware of vampires, ninjas or anything and with a damaged
short term memory, the ninjas see but one option - to make Aaron one of
them. Meanwhile in anohter part of town: Vampire leader Seth (Kurt
Skarstedt) has found out that the ninjas, or rather the actual witch of
the gang, Ann (Melissa McConnell) have an amulet in their possession that
could grant a vampire invincibility, even from sunlight, and to get that,
he'll stop at nothing, he even releases his insane - and thus highly
dangerous - brother Manson (Daniel Mascarello) to get the amulet ... in a
daylight raid. And thus, while the male ninjas are out training Aaron,
Manson and gang attack the ninjas house, kill Ann, seriously injure Lily,
and take Alex hostage, and they of course also take the amulet, which in
the wrong hands (like Seth's) could prove fatal to humankind. The ninjas
only have one chance to save both Alex and humankind, to push Seth through
a portal, the key to which Ann has left them, into limbo, but there is of
course on catch: One of them will have to perish in limbo as well ... Need
I mention here it all ends happily after a big showdown? Personally I
think that's not too much of a spoiler ... Like its predecessor
Ninjas vs. Zombies, Ninjas vs. Vampires is a fun movie that
effortlessly combines the sentiments of action and horror movies of the
1980's with fanboy comedies (think Clerks here) of the 1990's in a
pretty unpretentious way. Basically, this film is a comicbook come to
life: Not everything makes sense here, but not everything has to, there
are many things left unexplained, but in a genre movie not everything
needs explanation (big budget Hollywood of recent years seems to have
forgotten this). Now add to this a bunch of colourful characters brought
to life by a competent cast, a script that most of the time finds just the
right balance between comedy and drama, clever pacing that hardly leaves a
dull moment, and pretty well-choreographed fights ... and you are left
with a very entertaining flick.
