Derrick (Hassan Daffur) and Simon (Brian Mrikaria), two men who have
never met one another before, suddenly come to in a room without a door,
one tied up in the closet, the other chained to a bed. They make an
attempt to free themselves, but to little avail, and then a doctor
(Mohammed Mwikongi) enters the room from God-knows-where and shoots
Derrick - and then the game repeats itself again ... and again ... and
again - and the only thing that's different is that sometimes it's Derrick
who's tied to the bed, sometimes Simon. It's only when they start working
together and trying to free each other rather than each himself that they
manage to break that cycle - but they're still locked in a door-less room
and have little idea on how to get out. But every now and again, some
clues are dropped, be it in form of cellphones, keys, balloons carrying
messages, or even a TV set appearing out of nowhere. However, the clues
are so cryptic that they at times confuse more than they clear things up.
The bigger problem though is that the clues that they do manage to
decypher all point to the same thing, that they're to die. And that's not
even the whole truth which is actually way worse ... Now
without dropping a spoiler here, the resolution to the riddle this film
constructs is a bit of a let-down and feels somewhat forced. Fortunately
though, the journey this film takes us, a mixture of psycho thriller,
horror and character study, is truly fascinating, as it manages to make
the premise of two men suffering an hour-long meltdown in a single room
into a very exciting moviem thanks to a robust build-up, tense dialogue,
dynamic direction and camerawork, and very solid performances. And the
outcome is a highly original, inventive genre piece that might at times be
confusing but that at the same time entertains throughout.
