Jong-du (Sol Kyung-gu) just came out from prison after serving a 2 ½ term for a hit-&-run
accident, & - never having really grown up - has problems to come to
terms with reality. When he - well-meaningly - visits the son of his
hit-&-run-victim, he is met with dislike, but he takes an immediate
liking in this guy's disabled sister Gong-Ju (Moon So-ri), who her
brother lovelessly abandons in her appartment.. & though Jong-du
tries to rape her at first, the friendship soon grows mutual, even into
love, for he is the only one who really cares for her, she just being
brought food by her neighbours & her brother only needs her to have
his great appartment which he only can keep if he can prove one of his
family-members is disabled - but of course, apart from that, Gong-ju is
not to share in these blessings. But of course, their love is met with
little understanding, his family is unwilling to accept her - they are
hardly willing to accept him, even though he went to jail for his
brother who actually caused the hit-&-run-accident -, & when he
has (consensous) sex with her, her family catches him, having him
arrested for rape. Still, this won't change his love for her ...
I have to admit, I don't generally like films about handicapped,
physically or mentally retarded people, they tend to be what some people
nicely call touching though normally bittersweet, kitsch
or utter crap would be more to the point. This movie is more
interested not telling a story about a retarded person but a story that
invcludes a retarded person - which mght not sound much, but it's all
the difference in the world. The story is basically about 2 misfits (for
various reasons), who, despite the outside world, find each other (which
in fact is much more interesting than just telling about a person's
disability). The scenes, when Moon So-ri - not at all a bad looking
woman in real life - in the same shot turns from the retarded Gong-ju
(with distorted face & all) into a pretty looking girl & back
again just reinforce this, as it shows how the 2 main characters tend to
see her, as just a normal person, not a handicap.
