Shady Hunt (Julian Wadham) hired DC (Ray Stevenson) and his gang of
mercenaries (Richard Brake, Paul Blair, Brett Fancy, Enoch Frost, Julian
Rivett, Michael Smiley) to get something (he doesn't get mroe specific)
out of a forest in a war-torn Eastern European country. It doesn't take
our group long to reach the destination, an abandoned Nazi bunker, but
once there they almost immediately get under fire - by an enemy that seems
to come out of nowhere and leave no traces. Inside the bunker, our heroes
find a pile of corpses, and amidst the bodies, there is one still alive,
but in an apparent catatonic state. Eventually, after the group is
attacked again and again, and slowly and gruesomely decimated, Hunt
reveals what he was after: A machine that was built to apply advanced
field theory to humans, and turn them into super soldiers able to bend the
time-space continuum ... which is why they have no problems appearing out
of nowhere and disappearing again, and furthermore they cannot be killed,
not even by a shot in the head, which would kill a regular zombie ... Our
heroes put up a valiant fight, but int he end, they all die. 72 hours
later, the relief team arrives at the bunker - and immediately they find
themselves under fire. A rather nice Nazi-zombie effort that
outbalances its trashy premise by a fast enough pace, excellent actors
that get the most out of their rather flat characters, and a very
atmospheric directorial effort that nicely juxtaposes military routine and
the creepy and unexplainable goings-on in the bunker. Unfortunately, the
film is let down a bit by its finale that fails to pack the punch it
chould have to leave a lasting impression. Still, an entertaining watch.
