Amit (Amitabh Bachchan) & Kishan (Vinod Khanna) are brothers ... with
one difference: that Kisahan is the real son of police inspector Shamsher
(Sammi Kapoor) & his wife (Indrani Mukherjee) while Amit is only their
adopted son, the bandit Mangal Singh (Amjad Khan) is his real father - which
the brothers are not supposed to know, but Kishan has found out anyways ... but
thinks that he himself is the son of Mangal ... & Mangal thikns so too. So,
while still living with his parents, Kishan works for Mangal's criminal
organisation that specialiszes in robbing & smuggling gold & diamonds.
& somehow they are always one step ahead of ionspector Shamsher & Amit,
who has since also become a police inspector, especially since Kikshan has put
up a school for the blind as legal front for their illegal operations. &
then there are the thieving sisters Shabbu (Shabana Azmi) & Neetu (Neetu
Singh), who have fallen in love with Kishan & Neetu, respectively, &
try to get them into wedlock, even though Kishan & Amit don't care about
them a bit (there is a great musical number where the sisters threaten to
commit suicide should the brothers not marry them ..,. & the brothers help
them doing so), & all their efforts add up to naught. Then though Amit
devices a plan that includes a myriad of technical devices (like bugs &
micro cameras) to catch Mangal's gang, but first the thieving girls almost mess
everything up, & then Amit has to realize his brother is part of the gang
... but despite all his technical mumbo jumbo he lacks the proof, & when he
spills the beans to his dad, he only gets himself into trouble ... His
conflict with his brother doesn't keep Amit from saving Kishan's life though,
even though it costs him his eyesight ... not really, it just is the perfect
excuse to infiltrate Kishan's operation ... because who would attract less
suspicion in a school for the blind than ... a blind ? & as huis blind
self, Amit has soon gathered enough evidence against Mangal, Kishan & the
whole outfit ... when everything is going haywire: Neetu & Shabbu learn
Mangal is the man who killed their parents & tra to kill him but become his
captives instead, Kishan learns he is not Mangal's son, amit learns he is
Mangal's son, Mangal learns that Amit & not Kishan is his son & wants
to get trid of Kishan but make a deal with Amit, inspector Shamsher & wife
become Mangal's prisoners, ... In the end, after fierce battling in Mangal's
hideout (compete with a swampy pit & female dancers behind red canvas
(don't ask, but it looks cool) and a submarine, Amit & Kishan, who has
turned into a good guy in the end, save both the girls and their parents &
bring Mangal & his associates Jackson (Tom Alter) & Supremo (Kader
Khan) to justice, & even Kishan - now a good guy - gives himself up. After
Kishan has served his stretch in prison, it's marriage time, as Amit &
Kishan marry Neetu & Shabbu after all. Judging from reason
alone, a James-Bond-style crime thriller, a parable about two brothers one
good, one bad, and a romantic love-story involving 2 thieving girls are three
storyines that just cannot go well together ... yet whis movie seems to prove
reason wrong, since it turns this genre mix into quite an entertaining film
full of action, intrigue, romance & humour that is fast-paced enough to
keep its audience from thinking too much about its plotholes &
inconsistencies, & never takes itself too seriously. & while it might
not be a movie of any real significance, it stays enjoyable throughout.
