Sara (Annes Elwy) and Iwan (Dyfan Dwyfor) are two young lovers on the
run - a run that's stopped short by a horrible car accident in the middle
of nowhere, Wales. Fortunately, they are found by Stanley (Mark Lewis
Jones), a man about double the age of out young lovers, who drags them to
his house and nurses them back to health. Stanley's a weird one though,
he's stoic and monosyllabic, shy and socially awkward all rolled into one,
he doesn't smoke, he doesn't drink, and all the joy he's finding seems to
be digging a well in front of the house. He takes to Sara though, and she
to him as well to a certain degree, and she suggests to Iwan to stay, and
in return Iwan is to help Stanley with the well. Thing is, Iwan isn't too
fond of Stanley. But that said, the youngsters have a terrible secret that
finds them in a catch 22 situation. But there's more to Stanley that meets
the eye as well ... The Passing is nothing if not a very
unusual movie, a film that keeps one guessing till the end where it might
be heading to then surprise the viewer utterly. And while the film's
rather slow in its pace and seemingly uneventful over stretches, it
radiates a proper feel of unease, thanks to clever direction and
camerawork, but also to the great, very atmospheric locations. And a solid
cast doesn't hurt one bit either ...
