Lulu (Marina Choif) is a woman torn between her monotonous work at a
roulette table, her caring about her pill-popping, substance abusing
sister Nitzan (Juliette Marquis) and her love life that consists mainly of
mechanical sex with a man (Bobby Naderi) she doesn't even care about. Her
mother (Yelena Apartseva) comes for a visit which doesn't make things any
easier, but in a dream sequence consisting of surreal and/or symbolic
images, Lulu seems to find herself (I think).
... that all said, I'm not szure if my synopsis is even remotely
adequate - nor am I sure that a synopsis for this film can actually be, as
the film lacks narrative drive as such, which is substituted by symbolic
montages and surreal images (not only in the dream sequence) that try to
represent Lulu's state of mind. Now granted, Nina Menkes' cinematic
language is often powerful, but if you are (like me) a fan of narrative
cinema, you will find Phantom Love a tad difficult to access.
