When, instead of learning politics or the arts of war, Srisuwan &
Phra-Apai-Mani take up stick-fighting & clarinet playing
respectively, they are expelled from their kingdom. Wandering the
country, they soon join up with 3 swamis, who, using magical martial
arts, help the poor & opressed. & while Srisuwan comes in pretty
handy being good at fighting with a stick anyway, Phra-Apai-Mani has to
prove his powers of bringing peace to everyone with his
clarinet-playing, but when he does so, he also catches the attention of
an ugly giant Sea Witch, who has immediately fallen in love with him,
abducts him, brings him to her cave where she locks him in &
transforms herself inot a beautiful woman to live with him as husband
& wife. Srisuwan, who have overslept Phra-Apai-Mani's abduction, are
soon on their way to find their comrade & brother & come to a
kingdom preparing for a defensive war against some invaders. Srisuwan,
wo has fallen in love with this kingdom's princess Kedsara, agrees for
him & the swamis to be the princess' gardeners, only to be near her,
defend her in the war & beat the invaders, thus finally winning
Kedsara over & marrying her. Years later, the Sea Witch has born
Phra-Apai-Mani a son, who, due to his extraordinary strength - a trait
inherited from his mother - finds a way out of the cave where he &
his father find a mermaid on the beach, who Phra-Apai-Mani falls in love
with almost immediately. The 2 of them soon make up a plan to escape to
Crystal Island (with his son of course), a holy place the Sea Witch
dares not enter. After a long & exciting chase the mermaid,
Phra-Apai-Mani & son finally meet with Srisuwan & the swamis
plus Kedsara again, & they all have to fight the Sea Witch one more
time, finally beating her with the help of the swami's martial arts,
Srisuwan's stickfighting, the holy hermit from Crystal Island & of
course Phra-Apai-Mani's peace-bringing clarinet-playing. Colourful
& effect-laden fantasyfilm from Thailand, with some martial arts
& even (very soft) sex thrown in for good measure. The effects
(mostly computer-generated) are pretty nice actually, blending in pretty
well with the fantasy proceedings rather than supressing the story. The
story itself is based on a novel from the 18th century, & is rather
in fairy-tale-style, which sometimes feels a little at odds with some
rather graphic gore-effects - but then again, it makes some sense, too.
