Laurie (Isadora Leiva) really couldn't be happier by conventional
standards, she's naturally cute, one of the top cheerleaders of her high
school, has a near perfect body, and the quarterback of her high school
football team has just asked her out to an intimate date ... after hours
at the school's own indoor pool - but all of this is of course superficial
happiness, and that's where the problems begin, as she has severe body
issues, she never eats more than she can vomit, she corsets herself in
bandages she hides under her clothing ... and she blames it all on some
creature who might be real or might be her inner demon - but whatever it
is, when things come to a head things don't end pretty ... Now Pigskin
is nothing if not a very interesting movie, a film that bundles many a
cliché of many a high school and cheerleader movie (of both the comedic
and the dramatic type) together to let them all play out - but being one
step out of sync with the genre as such, being only seemingly about
surfaces first and foremost but actually getting deep into the addled mind
of the protagonist whose eating disorders get a disturbing new dimension
in this one. This works thanks to a directorial effort that diliberately
embraces the horror genre to make a point without going for pure
spectacle, and of course very solid performances by the lead characters. Totally
worth a look.
