Bernard Hedges (John Alderton), an idealistic young teacher, couldn't
have had a worse day for his first day at Fenn Street Secondary Modern
School, first he misses his station commuting there, then has a run in
with the school's caretaker Mr Potter (Deryck Guyler), the most powerful
man in school it later turns out, gets off on the wrong foot with the
school's vice principal Doris Ewell (Joan Sanderson), and finally, fails
to get a grip on the first class he teaches, the 5C, and especially their
rindleader Duffy (Peter Cleall), a class he's later assigned class teacher
of. It's only when Hedges later tries to set things right again and
accidently pushes Mr Potter in a heap of coal trying to apologize and
shake hands that his luck starts to turn, as the kids observing the
accident think he has used karate doing so - and that gets Hedges' at
least his students (rather fleeting) respect ... Of course,
from today's point of view, this first episode of Please Sir!
is really nothing special, pretty much a collection of genre tropes and
school jokes - but seen through the lense of nostalgia it's still fun -
harmless fun for sure, but it's old fashioned approach mixed with late
1960s attitude sure has its own charm to it.
