Tasya (Andrea Riseborough) is the top killer of a secret organisation
that uses brain implants to pretty much possess other people to let them
do their killings for them. The job has been getting to her lately as it's
above all not exactly helpful for family life, plus pulling a trigger on
the person she has possessed - the only way to sever the link between her
and her host - is starting to feel more and more strenous. But Tasya's
boss Girder (Jennifer Jason Leigh) believes in her and knows she can't say
no to a good assignment - and the next one promises top Dollars, as it's
to possess Colin (Christopher Abbott), who's the boyfriend of Ava
(Tuppence Middleton), daughter of high tech billionaire John Parse (Sean
Bean). And the job is to kill Parse and Ava as the organisation has stock
in Parse's company that would rise exponentially with the owner and all
heirs out of the way. But somethind doesn't feel quite right with this job
from the beginning as Tasya ever so often seems to lose control of Colin.
And while possessed Colin sure does his job assassinating Parse and Ava,
Tasya can't make him kill himself, instead he makes a getaway and wants to
hide with his girlfriend on the side Reeta (Kaniehtiio Horn), where an
operative from Tasya's organisation, Eddie (Raoul Bhaneja) catches up with
him and ... well, it doesn't end well for Reeta or Eddie. Thing is, with
her in his brain, Colin canm find out things about Tasya, like where her
husband (Rossif Sutherland) and son (Gage Graham-Arbuthnot) live. And
since Tasya has made him kill the person he loved most, Colin is out for
revenge ... Now admittedly, with a concept quite as elaborate
(and, really, far-fetched) as Possessor's, it takes a bit of
concentration to follow the plot and not get lost in the complexity - but
that's also part of the fascination of the movie, it's a sort-of maze
where anything can happen (and in the finale sure does) that to a point
questions one's perception of reality, much as the lead characters
question theirs. But that's all packed into a very tight thriller that
does a great job keeping up the suspense throughout, is stylishly directed
with a flair for atmosphere, and in all its slowburn approach shows
scarcely a dull spot.
