Living in some small town in Alaska, Buzz (Bradford James Jackson) has
drunk most of his yet young life away, but it got to such an extent that
he has become a threat to himself and others and thus has been mandated to
go through an AA treatment. And one of the "steps" he has to
take is to ask all those he has wronged for forgiveness - and that's quite
a lot of people, as among others he was once in a relationship with his
stepsister Brianna (Cassandre Leigh), has had sex with the girlfriend of
his brother Cliff (Cheyenne Buchanan), and has run his best friend Jason
(Berick Cook) over under the influence then put the blame on someone else.
So he drives around town with his friend Steve (Jeremy Blake), a 12 year
old Native American called Alex (D'Artagnon Moonin), who's the only one he
knows who knows how to handly a camera go film Buzz making his apologies,
and Henrik (Thomas G. Jacobs), a random homeless alcoholic whom Buzz has
inspired to go sober who'll die from a heart attack caused by cold turkey
along the way. But it seems the more he tries to do right, the more wrong
things go, as along the way he gets badly beaten up by almost everyone he
apologizes to, he gets so drunk it lands him in jail for a night, and he
catches Brianna in bed with Jason of all people. And despite setback after
setback, Buzz is determined to go through with his mission ... Only
on the surface a movie about alcoholism, this is actually a very
interesting characterpiece that puts its main focus on its story and does
neither blindly demonize alcoholism nor glorify the AA-program but paints
a very complex picture of a life out of bounds for a variety of reasons,
told in a very naturalistic way that, just like real life, peppers its
high drama with occasional comic outbursts, shows the gritty as well as
more tender sides of its story. And an aesthetically accomplished
directorial effort that still gives the actors their space, and a strong
ensemble cast make this one well worth a watch.
