Planet Orion is attacked by evil alien half robots led by a certain
Alfred. Colonel Larry eventually hands over control of the planet to the
aliens, but the children can be saved by the rocket train Super Express.
On earth, the Super Express is joined with super robot Mazinger 7, and
it's decided that the Mazinger Super Express should return to Orion to
defeat the aliens - inexplicably with the children still on board. The
whole mission is to be led by Kent and Mary - much to the dismay of
Ciprian and Susan, who are also on board, because Kent and Mary are the
children of Colonel Larry, whom Ciprian and Susan consider a traitor. So
Ciprian decides to sabotage the mission by taking it not to Orion but the
home planet of the aliens. Colonel Larry has made it to the aliens' home
planet and has become friends with Alfred and his second-in-command Helen
- but he's anything but a traitor, he actually tries to locate the
planet's main power source to destroy it from the inside. Eventually
though, Alfred sees through his charade and throws him into the dungeon.
However, Alfred too seems to start to slip, and it's not long before Helen
manages to usurp his throne. The Mazinger Super Express is lured into a
trap, and our heroes are all captured, and only when Ciprian and Susan
find themselves in the dungeon with Colonel Larry do they see that he's
anything but a traitor. At last united though, our heroes manage to
escape, manage to gain control of both Mazinger 7 and the Super Express
again, manage to find and destroy the main power source, betrayed to them
by Alfred himself in an effort to have his revenge on Helen, and all the
good guys with their robot and rocket train manage to make it off the
planet before it blows up ... Obviously inspired by the
Japanese Mazinger Z-series but attempting to cash in on the
success of the first Star Wars series, this is a naive and
simplistic space opera of the giant robot variety that somehow has a charm
of its own. Sure, it's not very well made, and corners are cut in the
animation department a few times too often, and yes, it's silly even - but
if you are able to get in touch with your inner, pre-teen boy, you might
still find this kind of fascinating. Not great by a longshot of course,
but at least entertaining.
