Eric (Jacob Motsinger) and Dave (Christopher Alice) are two country
bumpkins who always have always dreamt of being rock musicians, but while
they have been jamming with one another on their crappy guitars for years
now, they never thought about taking it to the next level ... until their
best friend Jane (Kristi Engelmann) enters them into a band contest and
pretty much forces them to make something of themselves - and while they
don't win the contest, they do attract the attention of a bigtime producer
(Christopher Showerman), who grants them some studiotime - but also
introduces them to the serious side of the business, making it clear to
them that their music and even their creativity doesn't belong to them any
longer, and that they are not a band half as much as they're just a
product that needs to sell rather than excel at making music. Not that
they like it, but Jane's pushing them very hard, being a key motor of
their success - and then Dave and Jane startb going steady, and that's
much to the dismay of Eric, who has long been secretly in love with Jane.
Still their friendship can weather this. Then Eric and Dave go on tour,
and their producer convinces Jane not to join them to not create a rift
between the guys ... and Eric and Dave soon enjoy the rock'n'roll
lifestyle, with alcohol, drugs ... and groupies of course - and of course,
Jane surprises Dave in bed with a groupie when making a surprise visit,
and she breaks it off immediately, leaving Dave crushed. So the feeling in
the band is rather down, even if Jane can't stop loving Dave from afar -
but he doesn't know that ... and then the tourbus crashes, and Dave dies
on the site, while Eric, who wasn't on the bus that day, is left to pick
up the pieces ... but it seems whatever he touches he makes things worse,
and almost succeeds in making Jane hate him - but will there be light at
the end of the tunnle? As imaginary movies about the movie
business go, this one's a very decent effort, as it doesn't just fall into
clichés and caricatures (though they're there) but has actual heart, a
story with a very distinctive beginning, middle and end, big drama but
also humour in the right places. And add to that some very decent
performances, and a handful of tunes that might be very middle-of-the-road
but are catchy enough so one can conceive they would become hits and that
have one tapping, and you've got yourself a pretty cool movie.
