For a reality show, six second string superheroes are grouped together
in a luxurious condo: Big Shot (Hunter Smit), the expert archer, Malibu
Action Girl (Keila Hamilton), a rich kid who's into this solely for the
swanky outfits, Water Warrior (Lars Slind), a vain guy who can talk to
fish (supposedly), Sam (Matt Palazzolo), a psychic whose powers start to
annoy everybody before long, Sable (Melissa Jobe), a single parent turned
superheroine always strapped for money, and her teenaged daughter Vixen
(Ilona Kulinska), who doesn't want to be on that show, is just discovering
her lesbian side, and isn't sure what she's annoyed by more, her mum's
constant meddling in her affairs, or her mum's constantly forgetting to
pick her up from soccer practice. Of course, proceedings in the condo are
initially as boring as on any other reality show ... until a shady
scientist disappears, calling our team into actions. Unfortunately, our
heroes are not cut out for teamwork, so they all fly out into different
directions, and of all of them, only Sable seems to be able to pick up a
good track - but what's worse, the next day after the blunder, the others
aren't interested in following Sable's leads but rather make a
team-bonding exercise - which eventually leads to Water Warrior being
exposed as being nothing but an actor and being replaced with Blue Arrow,
Big Shot's former partner and another archer. Eventually, the heroes'
condo is invaded by villains Necro Nazi (Guy Klender), a Nazi zombie, evil
scientist The Skull (Ginger Pullman) and evil wrestler Titania (Verona
Blue), who pretty much defeat our heroes and kidnap The Vixen ... and when
the good guys manage to catch up with the baddies, they discover they are
led by Dr Nightmare (Richard Van Slyke), Sable's ex and the father of her
daughter - which is why The Vixen switches allegiances rather quickly. But
Dr Nightmare has not yet won, as his underlings overthrow him and make The
Skull his successor, and The Skull wants to send nanorobots to all the
world leaders to take over their brains. Will the "real heroes"
be able to stop her? If you're too serious in your love of
reality television and/or comicbook superheroes (which unfortunately
waaayyy too many people are these days), you'll probably hate this one ...
but everyone else will find at least something to laugh in Real Heroes,
a rather hilarious blend of both these genres, diverse as they may be. Now
granted, not all the jokes in this movie are great, but the whole thing
manages to remain topical throughout and never drifts off into cheap
humour, quite some thought was put into telling an actual story to hang
the jokes up on, and a love for comicbook superheroes does shine through
everything. And even the fact that some of the more special effects heavy
sequences are done via comicbook panels add to the charm of this - and
actually makes sense in line with the crappy production values of reality
television. So if you can take things with a grain of salt, this one's
really fun!
