After having poisoned her partner-in-crime, a politician fallen from
grace (Leon Hill), Catherine (Frédérique Bel) travels to Hong Kong to
sell the legendary "white jade seal of the First Emperor", which
perfume designer Carrie Chan (Carrie Ng) is desperate to get her hands on,
even though it's stolen good. At the transaction though, Catherine is shot
by one of Carrie's underlings and the seal is stolen from her. Catherine
survives though, makes a getaway, and she kidnaps Carrie's helper Sandrine
(Carole Brana), not because Carrie would care about Sandrine but because
Catherine knows Carrie would welcome an opportunity to get rid of
Catherine - and thus Catherine sets up a trap that will ultimately spring
the other way ... There is one thing one ought to know about Carrie,
she's a pervert and a psychopath, she kills people to use their
shrink-wrapped corpses as decoration, and she wants the seal because she
knows it hides a certain potion that will make one feel each sensation
hundredfold, pleasure and pain alike, while paralyzing the body. Now
somehow, Carrie manages to "free" Sandrine from Catherine's
clutches, but only to try the potion on her, violently torturing her to
death in the process - oh, and she makes it sure that Catherine learns
about this, to so she knows what might be in store for her. In shock,
Carrie turns to a local gangster boss for help - and disaster takes its
course ... Red Nights is most certainly not to
everyone's taste - and yet it's a rather fascinating movie: It's violent,
it's perverted, its protagonists are all deplorable one way or another,
but at the same time it tells an enjoyably bizarre story in elegant
pictures and at a steady pace, it never loses itself in its perverions or
bloodbaths but manages to always see the bigger picture, it features some
bizarre but fun twists and turns, and it's carried by a very competent
cast. If you're into the grotesque, this is certainly worth a look!
