The Royle's living-room couch: Head of family Jim (Ricky Tomlinson) worries
about too much money being spent on telephon bills & electricity, his wife
Barbara (Sue Johnston) worries about her new job at the bakery that is supposed
to start the next day, neighbour's daughter Cheryl (Jessica Stevenson) claims
she has embarked on her umpteenth diet while family friend Twiggy (Geoffrey
Hughes) tries to sell cheap jeans to everyone. & it's only 6 weeks to the
wedding of the daughter of the house Denise (Caroline Aherne) to Dave (Craig
Cash) ... Above synopsis admittedly doesn't sound like much of a
story, & I haven't even mentioned yet that the show rarely ever leaves the
living-room (with the tv on all the time) let alone the apartment. Still,
somehow it works thanks to great acting, funny dialogue & very
characteristic actors throughout, who can portray working-class flair without
ridiculing it. However, the no-story concept (that permeates the whole series)
wouldn't work for any length over half an hour.
