Girls are being killed in a hotel next to some Aztec pyramids, and the
weird thing is their bodies disappear only minutes after being found. The
police send inspector Lavalle (Fernando Casanova) and his sidekick (Beto
el Boticario) to investigate, and Lavalle's girlfriend girl reporter
Virginia (Ana Bertha Lepe) comes along for the ride, much to his dismay. Despite
his best efforts, Lavalle isn't able to find out an awful lot, he can't
even stop the girls from being killed, their bodies from disappearing, and
eventually, he is even knocked out by the baddie - which is when Virginia
uses his wristwatch radio to call in championship wrestler Santo, who's
also a crimefighter, to assist them. Santo makes his arrival only known to
a select few, and while Lavalle investigates in the open, he secretly
follows a few leads - but eventually, they come to the same conclusion:
There must be a cave under the hotel linked to the pyramids where a vast
treasure is hidden. Eventually, Virginia is captured by the baddies,
whose leader is a mad professor (Alfredo Wally Barrón) who's staying at
the hotel pretending to be a harmless eccentric. Lavalle rushes to her
rescue but is captured. Santo rushes to his rescue and is captured, then
unmasked ... only he's not Santo but Lavalle's sidekick, which gives the
real Santo the element of surprise when he attacks the professor's men
from behind. Of course, he and Lavalle and company defeat them in the end,
with the professor meeting an ironic end when he falls through a trap door
into a pit full of Aztec treasures - but no way out ... Oh, by the way,
none of the girls were killed for real but all held captives in the caves,
and their bodies were actually wax statues - which is why they had to be
removed before they could be properly checked of course. It eludes me why
any of this was done though. Santo, the nominal star of this
film, doesn't appear until almost halfway through, and is then relegated
to supporting character mostly - which doesn't say anything about the
actual quality of the film of course, which is ... well, mediocre at best.
Actually, Santo en el Hotel de la Muerte is a pretty dull film, an
over-convoluted murder mystery that gives away its game to the audience
way too soon, lacks both in the action and the suspense department, and
doesn't make too much sense. That said, throwing a masked wrestler into
a traditional murder mystery always provides a few chuckles - but not
enough to keep this movie afloat.
