The earth is about to be overrun by aliens from
Andromeda & it is up to Byung-gu (Shin Ha-kyun) & his dim-witted
girlfriend Sooni (Hwang Jeong-min) to save it. To that end, they kidnap
Kang (Baek Yun-shik), important businessman & head of a chemical
corporation but also an agent from Andromeda, & torture him to get
the truth out of him. But as time passes, it becomes more & more
uncertain that he really is an evil alien, as everything might happen
only in Byung-gu's head & he is just out for revenge on Kang who was
somehow involved in an accident that put Byung-gu's mother into a coma.
When Sooni is told that by Kang, she even leaves Byung-gu, but that
wouldn't stop him though. In the meantime
the police is investigating the case too, in the persons of arrogant
squad-leader Lee (Gi Ju-bong), rough cop demoted to kitchen duties Chu
(Lee Jae-yong) & ambitious youngster Kim (Lee Ju-hyeon), with only
Chu finding out Byung-gu, but Byung-gu manages to keep up appearances
pretty well, & in the end Chu finds his suspicions only confirmed by
a human bone (from one of Byung-gu's former vioctims) that Byung-gu's
dog is carrying around. - But it's already too late, since Byung-gu -
part time bee-keeper - releases his bees onto the cop before he can call
backup. Byung-gu then goes on torturing Kang some more - this time by
means of cruzifying him, & now Kang really tells him how to awake
his mother from her coma, which has Byung-gu rushing of to the hospital
she is in, while Kang makes another escape attempt, & when going
through Byung-gu's journal he finds more & more reasons that might
have caused him to go over the edge & to have all of this dreamt up,
something young cop Kim also finds out when going through Byung-gu's
criminal records, but when he wants to get squad leader Lee to make an
arrest, Lee has already arrested someone else, a tailor-made suspect. So
Kim rushes to Byung-gu's place on his own, who at the same time also
comes back, furious that Kang's remedy actually didn't save but kill his
mother & is ready to torture him some more - & it is only thanks
to Sooni, who thanks to premonition has also been rushing back, that
Byung-gu is nto stopped by Kim. Still a prisoner, Kang realizes he has
to change his strategy one more time & now plays along & admits
everything of the Andromedan invasion to be true, only to lure Byung-gu
& Sooni into his chamical plant, where they have their final battle,
now on his turf. But though Kang manages to temporarily win the upper
hand, in the end it seems he is again losing the battle, only to be
saved by the timely intervention of Kim, who has managed to free
himself. But would you know it, then the battlefleet from Andromeda
really attacks, Kang is beamed aboard as one of their leaders &
earth is blown up ...
If you haven'T guessed by this synopsis (&
I wouldn't blame you), Save the Green Planet is indeed a comedy,
& a very dark, even violent one at that, but which has the almost
humane quality of sympathizing with the insane kidnapper for a change
(who is actually turned into the only reasonable person on earth in the
- somewhat predictable - ending), while his victim is portrayed as a
human monster who almost deserves every kind of torture he receives
(& that's quite a lot). That said, it's an extremely entertaining
movie to watch.
