Dundee, Scotland, 1980: Young Davie's (Conor Berry) future in football
looks rather promising - when a series of unfortunate circumstances leaves
him with his legs broken to the point where his sports career is over
before it has really begun. On the plus side, in hospital Davie falls in
love with his nurse Chona (Tara Lee), and they're soon dating - but Davie
knows being on crutches with no future is no good base for a relationship.
So he claims he's a music promoter, and talks his two best friends Scot
(Sean Connor) and John (Grant Robert Keelan) into starting a business with
him, and in Fergie they even find a sponsor for their venture. Now on the
plus side, Davie's nose for up-and-coming bands is excellent, and as
promoters he and his friends grow bigger and bigger. On the not-so-plus
side, Davie's no good at handling money, and that paired with a
predilection for gambling is despite growing the company loses money. And
on the really bad side of things, Fergie's anything but a benign silent
partner - in fact he's a gangster who insists to be paid, and paid to his
mostly unfair conditions, and he doesn't shy away from letting his right
hand man Pike (Blair Robertson) use a little violence to make his point
clear. That said, somehow Davie manages to duck blow after blow, until he
manages to get then soaring band Iron Maiden for a gig at a local theatre.
But when the band arrives and their manager (Richard Mason) starts making
demands, Davie realizes he might be in it over his head and might blow the
whole thing only inches from succeeding ... Based on
writer/director Dave McLean's actual life story (at least his early days),
Schemers nevertheless is nothing like your typical bio-pic, rather
a high-spirited comedy somewhat reminiscent of Trainspotting in
approach, with some nostalgic flair that feels surprisingly fresh,
including a score of some of the coolest music of the late 1970s/early
80s. And a paced story that never fails to entertain acted out by a very
relatable cast make this a very enjoyable piece of cinema.
