A top secret military gene-manipulation lab has been in charge of
developing a super soldier - but as ever so often, things went wrong, the
subjects the super soldier serum was tested on all mutated into monsters,
and suddenly chief of security Reeve (Jason Coviello) finds himself trying
to get a bunch of scientists out of the vast and maze-like underground
lab, a group that also includes his estranged ex-wife Julie (Jennifer
Summers) and lead baddie Clay (Clay Adams), who has headed the whole team
and who sees the current emergency as a field experiment. Of course, while
trying to fight their way through hordes of monsters, everything that can
go wrong does, Julie eventually gets bitten, Reeve gets separated from the
others, Clay wants to perform some impromptu experiments on Julie, and all
the while the mutant monsters' attacks grow ever fiercer, so the situation
could hardly be any worse - until it gets worse that is ... The
Shadow Walkers hardly breaks any new ground, in fact despite its 2006
production date, it feels more like a sci-fi action B-movie from the
1980s, as it has all the elements in place, from the manly man hero to the
clearly evil scientist, from the science gone mad theme to the wonderfully
old school monsters. But while the film might not rate high on the
originality scale, what it does do it does well, delivering in heaps on
the action and tension scale, making good use of its monsters, and pacing
the movie brisk enough for nobody to worry much about some narrative
inconsistencies. Basically it's just a fun ride, and at the end of the day
that's all that counts.
