The police want to get their hands on gangsterboss Bae (Oh Kwang-rok),
but he's one of these gangsterbosses able to weasel out their way out of
anything, as long as the police don't have a key witness - a key witness
like his former second-in-command Cha (Kim Kap-su) who has since left the
organisation. But now Cha has gone into hiding from both the police and
Bae, and soon Captain Chun (No Chu-hyeon) figures the only way to get hold
of Cha is through his daughter, high school student Seung-hee (Nam
Sang-mi). So Chun decides to send his owbn niece, young police officer
Jae-in (Kim Seon-a) back to highschool undercover as Seung-hee's
classmate, to make friends with the girl.
Unfortunately, Jae-in was an unruly kid when in school the first time
around, and now especially her superior fighting skills get her into
trouble with all the school's bullies while they don't get her one inch
closer to Seung-hee, who has broken up all her social contacts after her
mother died and her father went into hiding, and is not in the least
interested in making new friends. As if all that wasn't enough, Jae-in
also falls in love with her mysterious classmate No-young (Kong Yu), who
seems to be interested in Seung-hee as well and seems to be more
successful than Jae-in ...
Then everything changes when the rumour spreads that Jae-in is a secret
prostitute, and since Jae-in is an orphan, Seung-hee suddenly sees a
kindred spirit in her and the two finally become friends ... but being
friends with her makes it all the harder for Jae-in to use Seung-hee to
get to her dad - and when the police actually make an attempt to catch
him, they have to realize that Bae's gang is hot on their trail and it
seems there is a mole among the ranks of the police. And then it also
turns out that No-young actually is somehow mixed up in this (he will
eventually be revealed to be in Cha's employ to guard over his daguhter).
Showdown: The police wanted to take Seung-hee into custody, but somehow
the baddies got hold of her - thanks to their mole officer Cho (Ha
Jung-woo), an up-and-coming detective who always seemed to undermine
Jae-in's efforts in the first place. And somehow, the baddies got hold of
Cha as well, whom Ba now wants to humiliate and torture to death ... which
is when Jae-in and No-young - whom she has no choice but trusting - arrive
on the scene and beat everyone including Bae and Cho to a pulp in an
explosive finale ...
She's on Duty will probably never become a world cinema classic,
and it's true, at times the film is silly as hell - but that said, She's
on Duty is also lots of fun, it totally refuses to take itself
seriously (and given the plot outline, that's the only reasonable approach
to the film's subject), treats everything tongue-in-cheek, makes a
remarkable effort to stay clear of clichéd teen melodrama, is fast-paced
and features all kinds of impressive (though not over-the-top) fight
scenes. And Kim Seon-a in the lead does quite a remarkable job in playing
the klutzy police detective forced to become a teenageer in school uniform
again and milks this concept for its comedic potential.
A good laugh, really.
