It's 1944, and the Nazis are driven out of Finland but follow a strict
scorched earth policy on their retreat. Prospector Aatami (Jorma Tommila)
couldn't care less about the war as such, he just wants a carefree life
for himself - and having just struck a rich vein should grant him just
that. But bringing his gold to the bank he has to cross the retreating
Nazis' lines, and their commander (Aksel Hennie) has found out about
Aatami's newfound wealth. And knowing the Nazis are to lose the war in all
probability, he figures the prospector's gold might be just the ticket to
escape it all. So he tries his best to get to Aatami's gold and kill him
in the process. But Aatami, dangerous special forces soldier in the early
days of the war, just seems to survive it all, from landmines to a hanging
to drowning to an airplane wreck and ultimately takes out the whole Nazi
squadron, just to not lose his gold - or trusted dog at that ... Now
Sisu is by no means a subtle film, and if you believe in simple
logic let alone the laws of nature too firmly you might feel insulted by
this film - but all of this is intentional, Sisu was never intended
as anything but a pretty loud action spectacle that pays very obvious
hommage to 1980s genre cinema, and while playing it 100% straight doesn't
take itself serious for even a minute, and thus remains utterly
entertaining throughout, basically a pretty fun ride through genre
clichées, maybe not super brain-heavy, but very hilarious for sure!
