It's the height of the summer, and if the extreme heat isn't already
telling you that, the constantly chirping cicadas sure are - a sound that
drives our heroine (Kaori Hoshino) quite a bit mad as it is. And that a
creepy masked cicada catcher (Shinya Hankawa) with several specimens in a
container stops by the café she works at freaks her out even more. She
soon starts to have wild dreams about him, where he feeds his cicadas with
human flesh and breaks into her home to force cicadas inside of her body -
or are the dreams, as when she awakens she's covered in rashes. Her doctor
(Keita Kusaka) tells her this is nothing but a nervous reaction to her
fear of cicadas and it will go away with the summer, and prescribes her
some sleeping pills, but her condition only worsens by the day, and
eventually the rashes become actual wounds. And in these wounds, our
heroine believes to see - cicadas ...
Now this is a film that starts off as harmless - and actually
a bit boring - as can be, as a slice-of-life piece about a young café
worker. But by the by the film becomes more the more bizarre and
disturbing, and eventually goes full body horror, culminating in a
suitably grotesque finale. That said, the film is not for everyone, as
some of its imagery is rather on the explicit side, and has some quite
disquieting undertones for sure, but the dedicated genre fan is sure to
enjoy the film for exactly that.
