Some time in the future: When a submarine is shot down by a power
unknown, the WASP (World Aquanaut Security Patrol) sends its best sub,
Stingray, piloted by hero Troy Tempest and Phones, down to investigate ...
and before they know it, their sub is crashed too and they are taken
prisoners by the inhabitants of Titanica and quickly tried and sentenced
to death ... but Marina, the mute mermaid-slave of Titanica's king Titan,
frees them and they can steal one of Titanica's subs, take Stingray in
tow, and make it to the surface, only minutes before the WASP can launch
their nuclear missiles upon the Ocean floor - though it eludes me why they
wanted to nuke the ocean in the first place ...
Marionation is usually not the best way to tell a story, since the
puppets generally do lack the ability to show emotions and more often than
not they are way too wobbly to get across a dramatic story - and despite
good puppeteering, all this is evident in Stingray just like
any other marionation series. Where Stingray succeeds though
- like almost all other Gerry and Sylvia Anderson series - is its special
effects that thanks to careful miniature work with great attention to
detail puts most live-action TV-series of the same ilk to shame. Some of
the miniature work is breathtaking even nowadays !
Regarding this here episode of Stingray on its own: The
story is childish - but then again the series was made for children - but
the direction treats the whole thing just like a live action adventure,
and as mentioned above, the special effects and miniature work is amazing.
It's at least worth a look.
