Some underwater race living in the starfish-shaped city of Solistar,
has decided to wipe all land from the surface of the earth, using a
tanklike submarine. However, when they sink an island to test their sub
(in a rather hilarious scene), WASP (World Aquanaut Security Patrol) grows
suspicious, and when the supersub tries to sink California (where the WASP
headquarters are situated), the WASP supersub Stingray intercepts.
So the terrorists from Solistar decide to lure Stingray into a trap, by
actually luring the sub to their kingdom which is in a cave far beneath
the ocean floor and far deeper than Stingray ever went before. Stingray,
it seems, simply can't take the pressure of the deep, and when pilot and
co-pilot pass out it seems that she is easy prey for Solistar's supersub -
but fortunately, Stingray has mermaid Marina on board who is much more
used to the high pressure underwater, and she blows up the supersub just
in time, then she blows up Solistar too before getting Stingray back to
safety ...
As usual with Stingray, the effects (apart from the ridiculous sinking
island) are good, the puppets are bad, what this episode lacks though is
any kind of real tension and suspense. Thing is, the story offers plenty
of opportunities for tension, it just doesn't come across on screen
(partly due to lazy direction I suppose, partly due to the emotionless
puppets, of course).
Not really worth your while.
