Amanda (Jennifer K Preston) wants to start her life all over again, and
to that end she has bought a bed-and-breakfast in the middle of nowhere
and wants to get the place running together with her 17 year old daughter
Karli (Isabella Percival) - much to Karli's dismay who was to start
university this fall, and who especially doesn't like the location her mum
has chosen due to poor mobile phone reception, and that pretty much
everything's miles and miles away. However it is Karli who welcomes the
bead-and-breakfast's first guest while mum is out, Kyle (Damien Ashley),
who claims his car has broken down and he's in desparate need for help and
will only stay for the night, and he gives Karli a very generous tip.
However, the next day he claims towards Amanda he has booked the room for
three nights, and that Karli has embezzled the money he has given her as a
tip, creating a rift between mother and daughter. What's worse, Kyle soon
starts to act crazy, as if he was on the run from someone ... or
something. And eventually, when both Amanda and Karli have decided to
chuck him out, he shows his true face, keeps them at gunpoint, and tells
them he's actually hiding from some demons who are after him on a manhunt
merely for sports. And should the women give him away, they're the demons'
next prey. Of course, the story sounds much too fantastic to be true - but
then, what are all these figures, either humans or creatures, doing
outside, just waiting for him to leave the place? A very
effective little horror thriller that doesn't rely too much on spectacle
or effects but instead keeps its tension up throughout, and actually works
the best when the threat our protagonists are facing is not yet palpable.
Also the movie uses its relatively small scale to its absolute advantage,
creating an atmosphere of claustrophobia that goes along fine with the
film's theme. And a pretty strong trio of protagonists of course also help
to make this one welcomely tight genre effort.
