For Filippo Malgradi (Pierfrancesco Favino) things couldn't go better,
not only is he a successful politician, also he has just made a deal with
the shady but soft-spoken Samurai (Claudio Amendola) to pass a law that
would allow Samurai and his cronies to turn Rome's waterfront into a new
Las Vegas - of course to Malgradi's profit, but not illegal per se. If
Malgradi has one vice it's prostitutes, at best more than one and if
possible very young to underaged - until one prostitute, Jelena (Yulia
Kolomiets) dies from a drug overdose while in his hotel room. The other
prostitute who's with him, Ninni (Giulia Gorietti) calls on a friend,
Spadino (Giacomo Ferrara) to make Jelena's body disappear, but Spadino now
thinks he's got the politician in his hand. So Malgradi calls upon night
club owner Number Eight (Alessandro Borghi) to teach Spadino a lesson,
only he goes too far and kills Spadino. Thing is, Spadino was the kid
brother of Manfredi (Adamo Dionisi), a powerful gangster boss, who not
only wants his revenge on Number Eight, but also wants in on the
waterfront deal - and before you know it, there's an all-out gangwar, with
pretty much everyone playing and betraying everyone ... Suburra
is one really cool gangster epic, and one that despite a colvoluted plot
is easy to follow as its story is slickly told, a slickness that also
carries over into the film's directorial effort - a slickness that never
feels glossy though and never shies away from outbursts of violence. Also,
the film is carried by a very colourful cast of characters, that, if not
always relatable still come across as believable and are played by a
strong ensemble cast. And the result of all this is a very worthwhile
piece of genre cinema.
