A marriage is announced in an all girls Hasidic Jewish sleepaway camp,
which makes all the pubescent girls even more interested in all things
sexual than they'd be anyways - especially Shani (Juliet Brett) and Bayla
(Emmy James), who have gotten a book on sex from the local library, and at
the day of the wedding they have no problems to steal a bottle of liquor,
find a quiet spot, and basically explore one another's body in all
innocence their age would suggest. Only Shani discovers she's enjoying
doing this with another girl a little more than she's supposed to
according to teachings of the Torah ... Visually beautiful,
this is also a very touching movie as it seems to have a deep
understanding about what the girls are going through but doesn't hammer
its message home or painting a black and white picture. Instead, it shows
a deep understanding for both Hasidic Judaism and the girls' feelings
thanks to a subtlety in writing (which includes in
"under'"-sexualizing its subject matter - for maximum effect)
and a direction that gets the emotional undercurrents of the story. Really
touching for sure!
