Years ago, a village chief (Sorapong Chatree) lost a friend to the
Takien, a local breed of forest spirit, while on a hunt - and since then,
the forest surrounding the village is haunted. So the village chief has
decided to have a big dam built to flood the forest, even if that means
flooding the village as well - but it seems the Takien has no intention to
permit this and tries every trick in the book, including murder, to
prevent the destruction of the forest - so much so that the chief
eventually takes matters into his own hands to imprison the ghost in an
extended ritual. But after the valley is already flooded, the spirit is
accidently released in a fight between villagers and dam-workers, and soon
enough it starts to try to destroy the dam ... In the meantime, the
chief's daughter Pong (Arthittiya
'Mint' Dithiiphen) has fallen in love with Trai (Pipat
Arphirakchonnakarn), head architect of the dam - much to
the dismay of Kamthong (Nantawat
'Tor' Asirawat), her childhood friend and son of the man
the chief lost to the Takien at the beginning of the movie - and during
the course of the proceedings, the enmity of the two men gets more and
more heated ... When the dam is starting to crumble, Trai is getting
more and more desperate though, so much so that he goes on a diving
expedition to face the Takien. Thing is, the chief and Kamthong have
decided to go on a diving expedition as well and Pong has decided
to see what's going on, too, and before you know it, Trai, no longer Mr
Nice Guy, has killed the chief and taken Pong hostage ... and when the dam
finally breaks, he has no problems letting both her and Kamthong die - but
here the Takien shows mercy, saving the two and killing Trai instead - and
reclaiming her land, once all the water's drained off. And Kamthong and
Pong have finally become lovers ... A very nice and suitably
old-fashioned mix of horror, folk tale and romance of the love triangle
variety. Now admittedly, parts of the film are a bit cheesy and the CGI
effects are not always up to their demands (just like in any other
Hollywood blockbuster, actually), but expert pacing, fluid camerawork and
an involving narrative more than make up for the film's shortcomings. Recommended,
actually.
