Faced with an oncoming storm, pilot Randy (Gene Morgan) manages to land
his airplane on some open field and find abode for himself, his passengers
and crew - thirteen heads in al - in an abandoned farmhouse. And before
you know it, the light goes out, and one of the passengers, Forbes
(William P.Burt) is murdered. Another passenger, McGinnis (Sidney Bracey)
now reveals himself to be an insurance detective while Forbes was to
deliver a bag full of priceless gems to wherever. Eventually, the gems
are found, but they turn out to be fakes ... and before you know it, the
lights go out again, and Buchanan (Syd Saylor), a former prizefighter, is
knocked out, and when he comes to, his bag of gems is stolen, as it turns
out that he was the man who was actually supposed to deliver the gems
while McGinnis was only bait. Everybody seems to lose his or her head,
only Miss Daggott (Ethel Wales), a harmless but resourceful old lady,
remains calm, and in no time at all, she has found the gems, and of all
people, reverend Wingate (Henry Hall) turns out the diamond thief, and
soon enough, he threatens everyone with a gun ... but can be overcome
before he can do any real harm. Doris Hill plays pilot Randy's love
interest. Quite obviously, this movie was made rather on the
cheap, hence the very limited number of sets and actors, hence the lack of
action, lavish props and the like - but that doesn't necessarily make the
film bad, actually it's a pretty nice and well-written murder mystery of
the old dark house variety, featuring a host of interesting characters
played by a cast of competent actors, each of them doing his or her best
to carry his or her part of the story - and most of them succeed, too.
True, the plot might not be the most original, and the direction remains
somewhat flat throughout, but still, this is a totally watchable little
film.
