At first sight, the scene doesn't look troubling at all, a tattooist
(Want Yanhu) tattoos a beautiful artwork on the back of a platinum-haired
girl (Lu Li). He does so with great skill, and his studio looks like that
of a consummate professional. But if you take a trip into the man's mind,
you see another picture, there's people held in cages in a wet basement,
where they are tortured, mutilated alive and killed by the very same
tattoo artist. And the troubling part is, one can't be sure if that's
actually part of his imagination (which would be troubling enough) or a
look at what's actually going on in his basement ... Clocking
in at under two minutes and being devoid of dialogue, The Tattooist
is actually more of an experience than a film as with short sequences that
actually suggest more than they show it manages to capture the audience's
very primal fears. And likewise, with giving very little (if any) of the
film's backstory away it forces the viewers to interpret the on-screen
goings-in themselves - to rather fascinating and disturbing results. And
also thanks to a clever directorial effort and great camerawork, this is a
movie destined to stay with you for a while ... Feel free to
