When a group of thugs want to beat up Fatboy because he cheated them out
of their money, he is saved by Ah Jun, & the 2 of them
immediately become friends. But then Ah Jun, an orphan living with his
grandma, needs a large amount of money immediately, & he &
Fatboy decide to try their hand on gambling (& cheating) again,
winning a big sum at a cards table.
But when Ah Jun the next day tries
to make even more money at the Mah Jong table, he loses it all to
skilled gambler Uncle Da. But Uncle Da sees great talents in the 2
youngsters, Fatboy because of some (never quite explained) ESP-powers,
Ah Jun because he has perfect recollection (which comes in quite handy
when observing cards that are shuffled).
Tian meanwhile, the father of Ah Jun's grandma's nurse Hong, is the
greatest gambler of them all, but secretly he longs to leave it all
behind him, & so promises his daughter - who of course has fallen in
love with Ah Jun in the meantime - to put up one final gambling
contest, & should he lose to never gamble again - which Hong is happy
to hear. & of course our 2 boys are taking part in the competition
& are soon in the finale ... but then, Ah Jun's grandma & Uncle
Da are kidnapped by Tian's girlfriend Sister Hong (yes, the name-giving
is confusing) to force Ah Jun to lose - without Tian's knowledge. Fatboy
now decides to voluntarily lose to go looking for the grandma &
Uncle Da, while Ah Jun, who has promised nurse Hong to beat her father at
any cost stays in. But Tian himself has already seen through Sister
Hong's little ploy & orders her to release her prisoners to have a
fair game - which Ah Jun wins in the end.
His grandma dies, seeing him a
rich man now, & has him promise at her deathbed that he will never
gamble again.
Rather underwhelming gambling movie with a story that totally falls
apart: It's a bit of comedy, drama, thriller, fantasy & some
gambling thrown in with little or no connection between these elements or
between the individual episodes of the movie, so failing to put up
any real suspense or fascination.
