Recovering drug addict Hulda (Hulda
Lind Kristinsdóttir) is accused of the murder of overdose of her goodie
two-shoes brother (Steinþór Hróar Steinþórsson) and held for
questioning by shady cop Jens (Jens Jensson) but ultimately let go on lack
of evidence. Wandering the city looking for a place to stay, she happens
upon vagrant Hjörtur (Hjörtur Sævar Steinason) being badly beaten up by
a bunch of thugs and tries to save him - upon which Hjörtur seems to
develop superhuman strength and kills the thugs, literally takes them
apart, and while getting away stuffs the thugs' dicks into the mouths of
the cops arriving on scene. Hulda is hauled back in for questioning, but
let go again as there's no way she could have killed the thugs. But Jens
decides to keep an eye on her from now on.
Hjörtur crosses Hulda's path
again, and even though he quite obviously could have taken out the thugs
without her help, he thanks her profusely and offers to share his sleeping
quarters with her, humble as they might be. Hulda accepts, even though his
"quarters" turn out to be a car parked in the middle of nowhere.
Hulda also finds out that Hjörtur is actually a vampire, but since he's
gay and would "never touch a lady", as he puts it, she figures
she'll be fine. Hjörtur is touched by Hulda's trust and kindness towards
him, and thus as a thank you he wants to fulfill her biggest wish, to
bring her brother back to life. Only after havign been dead for 5 days,
her brother's brain has started to deteriorate, and once revived, he turns
into a blood-thirsty beast and soon slips Hjörtur and Hulda's supervision
to wreak havoc.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to
Hjörtur and Hulda, Jens' wife (Ester
Sveinbjarnardóttir) and
daughter (Birgitta
Sigursteinsdóttir) lead a doomsday cult with the mission to call upon and
destroy the prince of darkness, who just happens to be Hjörtur, but for
that they need a human sacrifice as bait - and who better to use than
Hulda ...
In essence, Thirst is a movie not to be taken terribly
seriously, it's an over-the-top gore comedy that treats one to shocks and
funny bits in equal parts - and while some of the humour is a bit on the
crude side, for the most part it works in a party movie sort of way: Sure,
the plot's very crazy and not everything makes perfect sense, but that's
really part of this film's appeal, the craziness, even if a catalyst for
more gore, is actually laugh-inducing, every suspension of disbelief in
this movie has its humourous side to it, and there's even comedy in the
gore scenes. That said, sure, Thirst is not a film for everyone,
but with a group of genre-friendly mates and a few beers, this will seem
like near-perfect entertainment.
