The film begins with 10 year old Daigo killing a helpless rabbit - a
gruesome scene, and as a result, all of the other students at school turn
against him and his mute sister Kiriko, who just happens to be the school
librarian. As a result, Daigo doesn't attend classes anymore, instead
hides in the library. Thing is, as helpless as the rabbit was, killing him
was actually an act of mercy, as it was dying a slow death and was beyond
help. But from here onwards, things get weird for the boy, as a plush
rabbit he has picked off the screen at a showing of a 3D movie seems to
show him the door to another world, the entrance to which is somewhere in
his home's crawlspace between the floors - or actually through the plus
rabbit itself. On the other side, there's an amusement park with creepy
rides ... Kiriko begins to suspect there's something seriously wrong
with her brother, and when he disappears for good, she manages to find the
gate and follow him to the other side ... but is pulled back by their
father, who has been acting weirdly detached of late. Thing is, father
claims there is no Daigo, he has died at birth along with his mother, and
Kiriko (who went mute then) has only made him up. Kiriko spends quite some
time in a mental institution to come clean with that fact. But once she
has come clean with the loss of her brother who never was ... her father
is dragged into the rabbit's amusement park worl ... Above
synopsis might sound totally ridiculous, and while the tongue's firmly in
cheek in certain scenes of this movie, it is also creepy as hell, as it
manages to create a nightmarish world out of the bizarre, even ridiculous.
And add to that an atmospheric directorial effort that masterfully uses
all tricks in the book, effective use of 3D that relies on long takes for
maximum effect rather than burying everything in rapid editing, and of
course a very competent cast ... and you've got yourself a deliciously
weird and scary movie.
